Fakeup Test: Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipstick

2/04/2017

I'm starting a new section on my blog where I'm going to review 'fake' makeup products, the so-called fakeups. Sketchy companies basically try to copy popular makeup items and sell them at really low prices on the internet. It takes only a few seconds of research to find a lot of red flags but I was really curious and wanted to try some of these products for myself and see if they're as bad as people say! Friendly reminder that I am NOT recommending these products and I will not share any links to purchase them.
The first fakeup item I'm taking a look at is the Velour Liquid Lipstick by Jeffree Star! You can find the original one at the official website for US$18.00 each + shipping. The fakes were US$5.00 each, with free shipping. All of them arrived after 30~40 days. I ordered the shade Posh Spice from one seller, Unicorn Blood and Doll Parts from a different seller.
Straight away you can notice that Posh Spice's pink packaging looks less vibrant than the other two, and it's much more obvious in person. The container itself feels expensive, a hard plastic that feels like glass. The name and logo on the packaging starts to come off if you rub it, as you can see, it's almost impossible to read anything on Posh Spice's container.
Let's start with Posh Spice! I actually ended up wearing this lipstick a lot before making this post so that's why it looks half empty on the pictures. The lipstick smells REALLY nice, like vanilla cake. But it's not that strong, so once you apply it to your lips it just fades away eventually.

The first coat was slightly streaky and, out of the three, this one took much longer to dry and it didn't dry completely. After a few minutes it was still tacky and not 100% matte, but it's smudge-proof and it doesn't get flaky and cakey. It's also really long-lasting! In person, the fake looks nothing like the shade you see on Jeffree Star's website. The real Posh Spice has a nude color, more beige/light brown while the fake one has a hint of lavender.

Moving on to Doll Parts! This one smells like fruity bubblegum and it's soooo good I could eat it. The real Doll Parts looks lighter on the website, the fake one looks much brighter and more magenta. Unfortunately it's hard to tell the difference judging by pictures because even the real one looks different depending on the lighting, camera, filter, etc.
Overall, the lipstick is slightly streaky at first but it dries SUPER fast so you can apply a second layer almost immediately. It's smudge-proof, long lasting and unlike Posh Spice, this one dries out your lips completely so it's a good idea to moisturize a lot after wearing this.

Last but not least, we have Unicorn Blood! This one smells like vanilla cake as well and it's really pleasant. A problem I have with lots of dark liquid lipsticks, not just fakes, is that most of them don't give you full coverage and it looks streaky even after two coats. This lipstick is not different.
Just like Doll Parts, it dried completely almost instantly, which is good... I think. The real one on the website looks like a deep dark brown, while the fake looks more like a purple-ish red. Again, I can't tell if that's accurate because lighting, filters, camera quality, monitor settings and all that stuff. This lipstick is also smudge-proof and long lasting.

Down below is a gif (no editing, no filters) showing you the three shades.
All the lipsticks actually do what they claim to do, which is to be matte, smudge-proof and long lasting, that's honestly surprising. The lipstick boxes are perfect copies of the real ones, which means they list the ingredients of the REAL product.
So, are the fakes really vegan and cruelty free? I'm not sure. But I'm guessing not. You can easily find cheap dupes for all of these shades on legit makeup websites or on your local drugstore or makeup store so don't be scared to go experiment!
